At the start of each month, NS&I announce the big prize winners in their monthly draw. In November the prize fund totalled more than £97 million and could give some people a cash boost as we head into the Christmas period.

How to check if you’ve won December’s Premium Bonds draw

There are two top prizes of £1million in each draw, meaning two lucky people have been made millionaires overnight.

In total an estimated six people will bag £100,000, 11 could home £50,000 and 24 people will be £25,0000 richer.

However, the winners will not be announced until Monday, December 2 as the first day of the month fell on a Sunday.

To check if you’ve won when Monday comes, you need to have your holders number as all prize and bonds are held under this.

Holders numbers are located on bond records or in your account on NS&I’s website.

The number should be either 10, nine or eight digits followed by a letter.

You can pop your bond holder’s number into NS&I’s prize checker here or use the prize checker app.

“Alexa, open Premium Bonds”

“Alexa, ask Premium Bonds have I won”

“Alexa, ask Premium Bonds when are the next prize draw results”

Despite December’s results not being announced until Monday, it may still be worth checking your account for prizes.

According to NS&I, as of October 2019, there are 1,667,922 unclaimed prizes worth £63,507,550 won 18 months or more ago.

There are also 624 prizes worth £27,600 won 18 months or more ago by bondholders whose names are unknown.

How are the winners picked?

NS&I use ERNIE to pick out winners each month at random – his initials stand for Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment.

ERNIE has been selecting prize winners for more than 60 years and has selected winners for more than £445million in tax-free prizes.

According to NS&I: “Using light, ERNIE 5 generates random numbers that are matched against eligible Bond numbers to determine the lucky winners.

“And because it’s random, every Bond number, whether it has 8, 9, 10 or 11 digits, has a separate and equal chance of winning a prize.”

In November, one of the £1million winners was a man from Cumbria who has invested £26,600. He won with bond number 168TK729554.

The second was a woman from Norwich who has £10,600 invested. She won with bond number 176LR488412.
