Princess Margaret was famously unable to marry the first man she intended to, Peter Townsend, a divorcee. However, she went on to marry Antony Armstrong-Jones. He gave her a stunning engagement ring.

Princess Margaret’s engagement ring

Princess Margaret’s engagement ring from Antony Armstrong-Jones was a stunning red ruby ring, designed to look like a rose. This was a sweet tribute to Margaret’s middle name, Rose.

There is a ring of diamonds around the central rock, designed to look like petals.

In fact, the couple posed in the Royal Lodge’s rose garden on the day of their official engagement photographs.

It was claimed in a biography that the ring cost £250 back in 1960. Due to inflation, this equates to around £5,709.89 today.

This is still shockingly cheap for a royal engagement ring. Meghan Markle’s engagement ring is worth around £155,000 in comparison.

Princess Margaret’s wedding

Margaret’s wedding took place on 6 May 1960 at Westminster Abbey.

The beautiful bride wore a dress by Normal Hartnell, who also created Queen Elizabeth’s wedding gown and coronation gown.

The gorgeous dress has a tiny, nipped-in waist and a tight bodice with a plunging neckline and a small Elizabethan collar and long sleeves.

Did Peter Townsend marry Princess Margaret?

No, Peter Townsend and Margaret did not marry. They had hoped to, prior to Margaret meeting Antony.

It was not thought to be a good match, and Margate was told she must wait two years to marry Peter. During this time she was told any children she had with Peter would be removed from the line of succession, as would she.

This prompted Margaret to issues a statement, reading: “I would like it to be known that I have decided not to marry Group Captain Peter Townsend. I have been aware that, subject to my renouncing my rights of succession, it might have been possible for me to contract a civil marriage. But mindful of the Church’s teachings that Christian marriage is indissoluble and conscious of my duty to the Commonwealth, I have resolved to put these considerations before others.

“I have reached this decision entirely alone, and in doing so I have been strengthened by the unfailing support and devotion of Group Captain Townsend.”

The Countess has worn the piece of jewellery a number of times since her wedding day – such as to the nuptials of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wore the Queen Mary Bandeau Tiara for her and Prince Harry’s big day.

The former Suits actor tied the knot with the prince in May 2018, at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Kate Middleton wedding tiara

Kate Middleton and Prince William wed at Westminster Abbey, London, back in 2011.
