Robin Hood is MEGA box office FLOP after terrible reviews: It made just HOW much?

The classic medieval folktale has been adapted numerous times over the years, but sadly the latest has failed to hit the target. Robin Hood made just $22.9 million worldwide in its first five days at the worldwide box office. This will no doubt be a huge loss for Lionsgate, having made the film on a $100 million budget. If anything the film’s failure did not come as a surprise, after a flurry of bad reviews.

As it stands Robin Hood has just 13% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with only 12 fresh compared to 77 rotten.

The first trailer for the new movie arrived in May and received backlash from many film fans on social media.

While this take is a reinvention, the footage was criticised for the modern clothing the characters were wearing, with Robin’s hood sporting anachronistic machine stitching.

The movie has also been slammed for having a very similar plot to The Dark Knight and a close aesthetic to Guy Richie’s King Arthur – one of last year’s biggest bombs.

Robin Hood was last adapted for the big screen in 2010, with Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe teaming up for the first time since Gladiator.

Nevertheless, the film wasn’t exactly a success with $321 million made on a $200 million budget.

But perhaps the best-known modern version is 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Despite mixed reviews, the Kevin Costner film has become something of a cult classic over the years.

In comparison, this Robin Hood made $390 million, which was the second highest grossing film of the year behind Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

The film also starred the late Alan Rickman as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, for which he won a BAFTA.

While its theme song, (Everything I Do) I Do It for You by Bryan Adams was Oscar-nominated and won the Grammy for Best Song.

Incredibly it spent 16 consecutive weeks at No 1 in the UK Singles Chart – the longest run in British chart history of its kind – selling over 15 million copies worldwide.
