Royal shock: 'Reluctant' Queen Elizabeth II makes surprise gesture to help 'crazy' aide
Dresser and confidante of the Queen, Angela Kelly revealed that she and Her Majesty both enjoyed astronomy. In her new book ‘The Other Side Of The Coin: The Queen, The Dresser And The Wardrobe’, she explains that the Queen wanted to support the interest. The Queen told Ms Kelly to take a car from Balmoral Castle to try out her telescope.
However, Her Majesty was said to be “reluctant” to let her go out at midnight and told her to get a royal escort.
In the book, Ms Kelly explained: “I’d always loved star-gazing and I find it a very calming experience.
“The Queen shared this passion and we looked out of the window into the darkness together.
“She pointed out the various constellations — the Plough, Ursa Major and Cassiopeia.”
Upon hearing that Ms Kelly had recently purchased a telescope, the Queen encouraged her to go outside late at night in a bid to get the best viewings of the stars.
Ms Kelly asked Her Majesty if she could borrow a car to drive up a nearby mountain.
She added: “The Queen thought I was crazy and was reluctant to let me drive there alone, so she asked one of her duty protections officers to escort me.”
The book contains a number of stories involving Ms Kelly’s time with the Queen, and Royal Family.

She added: “We wander through the stalls – Her Majesty leading the way, followed by me and the Ladies-in-Waiting.
“Something will catch the Queen’s eye – usually a vibrant fabric, given her fondness for bright colours – and she’ll gesture to me.”
The dressmaker described how their selections were always ready for collection on their return.
Ms Kelly added: “It’s my responsibility to pay the bill.”
Ms Kelly has worked with the Queen for 25 years.
The Queen appointed Ms Kelly a member of the Royal Victorian Order in 2006, promoting her to Lieutenant of the same Order (LVO) in 2012 for “distinguished personal service to the Sovereign”.
Ms Kelly now designs many of Her Majesty’s outfits and holds a lengthy title that has not been granted to any other royal servant.
She has been credited with transforming the Queen’s image and has been referred to as the Queen’s “gatekeeper”.
