Royal Wedding: Our Top 5 favourite wedding scenes on film

It will be very hard to top the real thing this year. Meghan Markle is already bringing Hollywood glamour to the British royal family, while Prince Harry is beloved and handily also provides all the castles and tiaras a girl could ever want.

With the Royal Wedding coming up this weekend, we’re dreaming of our perfect wedding – horse drawn carriages, beautiful dresses and a castle!

Take inspiration from these gorgeous wedding films and get us in the mood for the wedding of the year.

Mamma Mia

Set on a beautiful Greek island leading to a gorgeous destination wedding (jealous!), Mamma Mia is a musical romantic comedy based on the musical of the same name featuring hit songs by ABBA.

Meryl Streep plays the lead role of single mother to Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who is getting married and trying to work out which of the three men, played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård is her real father played.

Sound of Music

Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer lead the all-time classic The Sound of Music about Maria, a young Austrian woman who is sent to be governess to Captain von Trapp’s seven children.

After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, her and Captain von Trapp marry in a regal cathedral, with Maria in a classy and elegant wedding dress – not dissimilar to Kate Middleton’s!

My Best Friend’s Wedding

Julia Roberts gives a charming performance as Julianne in 90s romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding also starring Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett.

When Julianne’s long-time friend Michael reveals he’s engaged, she realises that she loves him herself and sets out on a mission to get him with only days before the wedding.

With a bittersweet ending, the film is a tearjerker and puts a spin on the classic rom-com structure.

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers

Featuring crowd-pleasing tunes and charming performances, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a successful film adaptation from the Broadway musical which won the Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.

Set in 1850 Oregon, the film tells the story of a backwoodsman who brings a wife home to his farm, and makes such an impression that his six brothers decide that they want to get married too!

The musical numbers are great and super feel good, especially those made out of such mundane frontier pursuits as chopping wood and raising a barn – it’s sure to please the whole family!

The Princess Bride

A delightfully postmodern fairy tale, The Princess Bride is stars Robin Wright and Cary Elwes.

Buttercup lives on a farm in the fictional country of Florin and falls in love with Westley, their farm boy, but the two are separated and soon Buttercup reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdink – a memorable scene where the clergyman (Peter Cook) says “Mawiage. Mawiage is what brings us together, today.”

While Westley approaches the castle gates and saves her from the evils of the mythical kingdom just in time.
