Russia horror plane crash leaves two dead as An-24 smashes into side of Siberian building

An Angara Airlines flight to Ulan Ude was forced into an emergency landing but ended up skidding 100m on the runway and crashed into a sewage plant. The two dead are both crew members according to Russia Today. Another seven that were on board have been hospitalised while 43 have been rescued.

Spokesman for the Russian Republic of Buryatia, where the crash took place, Alexey Fishev explained: “One of the engines failed when the plane took off. The crew took the decision to return to the airport.”

Angara Airlines is mainly a domestic airliner, primarily for Eastern Siberia, but it does offer an international flight to Manzhouli in northwest China from Irkutsk.

The flight from Nizhneangarsk to Ulan Ude is 6hrs 55mins in length with a stopover in Irkutsk.

According to Google, there is no direct train between the two cities and with driving taking over 19 hours, many people requiring a journey between the two take a plane.

A source on the ground has since added the two dead are the captain and a mechanic.

Those being treated at hospital are only inflicted with “moderate” injuries.

The tragedy occurs one month after 41 people lost their lives after an Aeroflot plane was struck by lightning and burst into flames.

Flight attendant Tatyana Kasatkina received praise after she kicked open a door and pushed people down the emergency slides as 33 passengers and four crew members survived.

A source from emergency services has said the captain and mechanic sacrificed themselves to save the passengers.

They told Interfax: “The commander did not leave the board until the last moment. It was impossible to save him.”

Since 2016, no winter flights have taken been served the Nizhneangarsk Airport.

Ulan Ude where the flight was headed is the third largest city in the Russian Far East, behind Khabarovsk and Vladivostock.
