Secret Life of Pets 2 box office: Sequel is top dog at box office – how much has it made?

The Secret Life of Pets 2 brings many familiar animal faces back to the big screen. The sequel only holds 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but its critics’ consensus reads: “The Secret Life of Pets 2 doesn’t teach its animated stars any new narrative tricks — but for fans of the original, this funny, energetic sequel should still satisfy.” Though perhaps disappointing for fans over ten-years-old, the movie has taken the top spot at the North American box office.

How much has The Secret Life of Pets 2 made?

Perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not, The Secret Life Of Pets 2 has topped the North American box office in its opening weekend – surpassing X-Men Dark Phoenix.

Globally, the animated sequel has earned £76.2 million ($97m) at the box office.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 debuted to £37m ($47.1m) which was enough to place the movie at number one, over Dark Phoenix

Dark Phoenix, the last in the X-Men prequel saga, only made £25.9 m ($33m) over its opening weekend.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 opened in 4,561 locations in North America, making it the second widest opening ever, with Avengers: Endgame being number one.

Unfortunately for Universal Studios, The Secret Life of Pets 2 only made half of the original film’s £82m ($104.3m) opening weekend takings.

In fact, the 2016 Secret Life of Pets is a record holder for the opening of an original, animated feature.

Universal had predicted the sequel would take approximately $50 million, but the real takings fell short.

In overseas areas, the sequel opened back in late May, to relatively low numbers.

From its international release across 30 markets, the movie made £38.5m ($49m).

The Secret Life of Pets 2 had its strongest International opening in Russia, where it took just under £13.3m ($17m)

Countries where The Secret Life of Pets 2 remains to open in include Australia (June 20), Germany (June 27), Brazil (June 27), China (July 5), Japan (July 26), Korea (July 31), France (July 31), Spain and Mexico (both on August 9).

According to Box Office Mojo, the future of The Secret Life of Pets 2 is uncertain.

They compared the animated-animal-adventure to other Universal animated sequels.

Both Hotel Transylvania 2 and the Kung Fu Panda 2 made, over their runs, over £129.7m ($165m).

However, neither sequel had similar release dates, with The Secret Life of Pets competing in the summer movie season.
