Shazam box office: Slapstick superhero movie gives DC another WIN – how much did it make?

Critics have been almost universally wowed by Shazam. The kid-friendly superhero movie has proven sometimes silly is best. The DC Comics adaptation has an approval rating of 92 percent, but critical success does not always translate into a box office hit.

How much has Shazam made at the box office?

Shazam easily surpassed the one hundred million dollar mark over its debut weekend.

The Zachary Levi helmed superhero flick opened on 40,000 screens in 79 offshore markets.

Within those 79 markets, Shazam placed number one at the box office in 60 of them.

In North America, Shazam grossed £78.1 million ($102m).

For its global opening, Shazam made a total of £121.6m ($158.6m).

At IMAX cinemas, the movie took the mantle of best global Warner Bros opening for April.

These takings are in line with industry predictions.

They also prove Warner Bros has corrected its course when it comes to comic book adaptations..

In the European territories, Shazam is tracking in a similar vein as Marvel hit Ant-Man.

But in Latin America, Shazam outperformed Ant-Man by 11 percent.

Outside of China, other Asian territories saw Shazam surpass movies like Guardians of the Galaxy by 12 per cent.

Shazam’s closest contemporary, Ant-Man continued to deliver on a 3.1x multiplier in 2015.

If Shazam continues on par with Ant-Man, the kid-friendly superhero flick could gross over £122.4 m ($160m).

Once Avengers: Endgame hits cinemas, however, all bets are off.

Shazam had a budget of approximately £76.6m ($100m).

The movie tells the story of 14-year-old Billy Batson who shouts out one to transform into the adult superhero Shazam.

Shazam does what any other teen would do – has fun while testing out his newfound powers.

But he’ll need to master them quickly before the evil Dr Thaddeus Sivana can get his hands on Shazam’s magical abilities.

Shazam is now playing in cinemas.
