When is Solo A Star Wars Story released?

The third origin film in the canon, Solo: A Star Wars Story hits UK screens on May 24, 2018, everywhere else on May 25, with a sneak peek screening at the Cannes film festival on May 15, 2018.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will hit UK cinemas on May 24, 201 – a day earlier than the US.

The film is a Star Wars spin-off film that focuses on Han Solo’s early life.

Who is in the cast?

Sticking to their guns on casting relatively unknown faces, like Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the Solo movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as its titular character.

Ehrenreich is an American actor whose only major credit before this was Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro in 2009.

He brings all of Han’s charm and devil-may-care attitude to life without the cynicism fans have come to expect from Harrison Ford’s portrayal of Han as an older man.

The unknown faces stop there.

Mother of Dragons, the first of her name, Emilia Clarke picks up the role of Qi’ra, Han’s childhood friend who delivers the zinger line: “I might be the only person who knows what you really are.”

Lando Calrissian, the renowned smuggler and gambler, is played by Donald Glover, a man of many talents.

Glover has been in the headlines under his musical alias Childish Gambino with This is America, an acclaimed song and video that puts the US’ issues at its forefront.

He is also known for his role in the hit TV comedy Community and as the writer and star of FX’s Atlanta.

Woody Harrelson is an equally familiar face. His career has spanned decades, from Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers to HBO’s hit True Detective.

He stars in Solo: A Star Wars Story as Tobias Beckett, a brand new character loosely based on Long John Silver, according to screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan.

Westworld’s Thandie Newton and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge also join the cast as Val and the pithy droid L3-37, respectively.

What is the plot of the Han Solo movie?

Most of Solo: A Star Wars Story seeks to explain how Han Solo went from “I have a good feeling about this” to “I have a bad feeling about this.”

We see him being drawn into the life of smuggling, as his mentor Tobias Beckett leaves him with the good bit of advice: “Assume everyone will betray you and you will never be disappointed.”

Fans of Empire Strikes Back will know how clairvoyant this line is.

We will get to see how Lando lost the Millenium Falcon to Han, learn that Chewy is actually 190 years old, and witness daring intergalactic escapades with the galaxy’s most beloved scoundrel.
