Solo Star Wars Story: THAT huge cameo EXPLAINED by writers ‘The character was under-used’

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Darth Maul – now known only as Maul – is revealed to be the person Dryden Vos answers to in the Star Wars anthology tale.

When Dryden is killed by Qi’Ra in the final stretch of the movie, it seems it is her, played by Emilia Clarke, who must go to meet Maul.

That is where the film ends, leaving the door wide open to sequels.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, co-writer Jonathan Kasdan said: ”So it was something that I’d been subtly laying in hopefully early on.

“I always sort of thought that’s a character I adore from the prequel trilogy I felt like was under-utilised in the prequel trilogy.

“So it was something that, when we realised that we wanted someone in the crime world above Dryden, we wanted it to feel like there were bigger fish than even the ones we get to meet in this movie.

“There was no one more lethal and more in the spirit of the ultimate villain that we could identify in the trilogy than him.”

He added: “That’s something that I sort of always wanted, and Ron was very supportive of. Sort of intuited that it’s what I wanted, and we made it happen.”

Maul’s brief appearance in the Star Wars big-screen movies was in Episode I: The Phantom Menace back in 1999.

He was seen being slashed at the waist by Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and falling down a shaft – but the animated shows later clarified that he didn’t actually die.

Another rumoured cameo – of Jabba the Hutt – did not come to fruition in Solo.

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han, alongside Donald Glover as a younger Lando Calrissian. Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge also appear.
