Spider-Man Far From Home released its second trailer online yesterday and fans were thrilled. The trailer gave fans a glimpse into Peter Parker’s summer holiday in Europe. Warning: there are major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame below.

Who does Jake Gyllenhaal play in Spider-Man Far From Home?

In the trailer for Spider-Man Far from Home, Jake Gyllenhaal was introduced as Mr Beck, aka Quentin Beck.

Nick Fury tells Spider-Man he is from ‘Earth, just not our Earth’ implying Mr Beck comes from another dimension.

Fury further added: “The snap tore a hole in our dimension” but how Mr Beck wound up in ‘our’ dimension remains to be seen.

Mr Beck is in Europe with Fury to try and control the rogue Elementals wreaking havoc on historic sites throughout Europe.

However, many believe Mr Beck isn’t as good as he says he is.

In the Marvel comics, Quentin Beck is actually the villain Mysterio.

Hollywood Reporter described Mysterio as: “a villain whose entire gimmick is misdirection.

“He’s a former special-effects expert and stunt man who turns his skills to crime, coming up with greater and greater illusions to trick Spider-Man — and the reader — into believing things that can’t possibly be true.

“The Far From Home teaser lets the audience see various Elementals in action, but curiously enough, only one character is shown interacting with them in any truly appreciable manner — and it’s Mysterio.

AVENGERS ENDGAME: MORE SHOCKS TO COME IN SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME?

“Nick Fury shoots at one and Peter is apparently blasted by a wave by another, but both of those could be explained away as illusions with well-placed props.

“Only Mysterio is shown to interact with one of the creatures while in humanoid form, which could be an indicator that the Elementals aren’t actually real at all.

“Instead, they’re massive illusions on behalf of Mysterio as part of the as-yet-unknown scheme.”

But for those who haven’t read the comics, Mr Beck seems like a good guy.

Whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new multiverse theory plays into Mysterio’s appearance remains to be seen.

Jake Gyllenhaal himself teased his character’s confusing backstory in an Instagram post.

The video posted to Instagram shows Gyllenhaal reading a classic Marvel Spider-Man comic titled “The Return of the Man Called Mysterio”.

He lowers the comic, with an expression of awe on his face and says “Woah… What the f***?” before the video stops and cuts him off.

The caption he penned reads: “I just realised I’m not playing Spider-Man.”

Spider-Man Far From Home is out in cinemas on July 2, 2019.
