Spider-Man Far From Home post-credits scene reveal was a BAD move for the MCU’s future

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME AHEAD. Teases from film critics claim the post-credits scene for Spider-Man Far From Home is one of the best in the MCU’s 11-year history. The moment itself saw Nick Fury and Maria Hill driving along before they suddenly turned into Skrulls Talos and Soren. Fans will remember the couple last featured in Captain Marvel, where they teamed up with Fury in 1995 before heading off into space with Carol Danvers to find a new homeworld.

Reporting back to the real Nick Fury, who had been on a virtual holiday on a Skrull ship, the big shock reveal was that throughout Spider-Man Far From Home it was Talos and Soren disguised as Fury and Hill all along.

Marvel clearly intended this to be an amazing post-credits sting, which at one level it is, but it also creates a lot of problems for the MCU.

Rather than leaving the cinema on a high, the final moment of the Infinity Saga seems to have left audiences baffled, considering reactions on social media.

Annoying questions are left lingering, like whether Fury and Hill were truly in all of their previous MCU appearances, or if some of those were Skrulls.

After all, Captain Marvel is set in 1995, so Talos could have been disguised as Fury multiple times throughout pretty much all of his MCU arc.

It’s also a lazy plot device that leaves Fury and Hill’s roles feeling pretty pointless and makes the future use of this plot device, inspired somewhat by Marvel Comics’ Secret Invasion, concerning.

What if other characters fans have been following along are suddenly revealed to have been Skrulls all along?

Such reveals are as unsatisfying as Dallas’ “It was all a dream” or any such other us of deus ex machina, as it makes character development and important plot points fell entirely pointless and devoid of payoff.

Even if the Marvel Studios decide to delve deeper into the Secret Invasion arc, there’s an issue there too.

Captain Marvel’s big twist was that the Kree were the real baddies and the Skrulls were friendly immigrants.

Whereas in the Secret Invasion comics, the villainous Skrulls secretly replace many MCU superheroes years previously.

Marvel have just peaked with Avengers Endgame, but they need to tread carefully as they explore new ways of keeping the highest-grossing film franchise of all time fresh.

Spider-Man Far From Home is out now.
