Star Wars 9: Rey 'is NOT a Skywalker' – major 'related to Kylo Ren' theory proven WRONG?
While Rey’s parentage is still (technically) unsettled, fans have been speculating on how she could – if at all – tie in to the rest of the Star Wars cast.
One popular suggested explanation for her close bond with Kylo Ren, as explored in 2017’s The Last Jedi, is that the pair are related – which would neatly tie her in to the Skywalker dynasty.
This, the theorists have said, explains why he tells her she had “nobody” parents – as he would be deliberately deflecting her from the truth.
However, another fan on Reddit has resurfaced something that could rule the possibility out.
There’s a deleted section of Luke Skywalker dialogue in Last Jedi, released on the Blu-Ray release, in which he chastises Rey for her strange Force connections with Kylo.
“You opened yourself up to the Dark Side for a pair of pretty eyes!” he rages.
User bothanyspy89 has been 94% Upvoted on the Star Wars Speculation area for pointing out: “If Rey is related to Ben [Kylo] why would they have filmed this dialogue of Luke?”
With Kylo related to Luke too – he is the iconic Jedi’s nephew – surely Luke would know if Rey was in the family; thus making that line a little nonsensical, as he seems to be implying a romantic spark between them.
Whatever the truth behind Rey’s background, it’s been revealed that JJ Abrams will honour what Rian Johnson did with Episode 8 – but there may be more to it.
“[JJ] did say the question is answered,” Daisy Ridley told USA Today. “So at the end of the film, you do know what the dealio is.”
And speaking of her own experience with fan theories, she recalled: “I haven’t seen much this time, but last time I found it pretty hilarious because people were talking about time travel and that Kylo Ren was a baby. It was nuts.
“The one thing (with Episode 9) was my agent’s son said, ‘I bet you the title is going to be blue,’ and I was like, ‘How’d you know that?’”.
Ridley has also recently spoken out to lambast those who took their criticisms of The Last Jedi to “vicious” levels.
She told USA Today that “everyone’s going to have an opinion now anyway on the internet, but I also think it’s fair”, but added to Bustle that sometimes a line is crossed.
“It’s great that people are expressive of their views. But this is people’s jobs,” she said.
“People worked really, really hard on that thing. I think there’s a way of having a discussion that isn’t so vicious.”
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out on December 19.
