Star Wars 9 Rise of Skywalker star SHOOTS DOWN Rey red lightsaber Sith theories

The folk at Lucasfilm and Disney do enjoy a last-minute shock teaser every time they release new footage. The first time around it was the sound of Palpatine cackling at the end of the Star Wars 9 teaser trailer unveiled at Star Wars Celebration. The Emperor actor Ian McDiarmid himself then strolled casually onto the stage. When the latest sizzle reel was shown last month at the D23 Disney Expo, it ended not only with the ominous sound of Darth Vader breathing – it also showed shocked fans across the world a Dark Side Rey. 

What the Force is going on?

Immediate frenzied theories crashed onto the internet as fans raced to worl out what they had seen.

Will Palpatine tempt Rey across to the Dark Side? Is she the apprentice he has been seeking all along? Is it part of an epic switch as Kyylo Ren makes his way back to the Light and redemption?

Palpatine is also suspected to have the power to possess living Force users. Does he simply take over Rey?

The most extreme opposite theories centre on the likelihood the sight of Rey igniting a double-ended red Sith lightsaber is actually just another vision.

The Star Wars Show on the official Star Wars Youtube channel has just uploaded a new video packed with content from D23.

Many of the stars of Episode 9 were collared on the red carpet and asked probing questions about the upcoming final part in the Skywalker Saga.

Daisy Ridely was predictably cagey about Rey’s shock transformation. When the host said he thought the scene was “absolutely amazing,” Ridley added: “So did I.”

That is literally all she would say on the matter.

Her co-star John Boyega, however, was ready to shoot down the theories.

Boyega said: “I think we don’t need to do any theories about it.”

And why is that? Does he have some great revelation? 

The British star added: “It’s just a wardrobe change… She liked it.”

Somehow, we suspect that is not true. We also know that Disney and Lucasfilm will guard their secrets until the very last possible moment. the saga has been going for 42 years, after all. What is a mere four months to wait?
