Star Wars 9 will correct these TWO major issues from The Last Jedi about Rey and Luke?
Will Luke finally get a redeeming storyline and will we find out the real truth about Rey’s parents?
We now know that Episode 9 will be used as a “course correction” for The Last Jedi in order to fine tune the continuity of the trilogy. Industry bible Variety broke the news, in a remarkable public acknowledgement of the powerful divisions created by that movie among fans and filmmakers.
The cancellation of spin-off movies like the much-teased Boba Fett origin story, the unlikely odds for any Han Solo sequel and the increasingly uncertain future of Rian Johnson’s own spin-off trilogy have been explained away as a new focus on the small screen projects that will be used to help launch Disney’s new streaming platform.
But the core nine-film franchise remains the heart of the entire Star Wars universe and it must be brought home successfully to enable the other projects to flourish.
There are certain divisive issues that just won’t go away and the latest news points clearly to them being addressed in the final movie.
According to Variety, director JJ Abrams is “currently working on Star Wars: Episode IX, which has been billed as a course correction at Lucasfilm after spinoff films like Solo failed to meet the label’s high commercial expectations.”
Abrams, of course, set the tone and storyline expectations for the sequel trilogy, which were then comprehensively turned on their heads by Rian Johnson’s determination that “the past must die.”
Crucially two of his most controversial story decisions were both rooted in the past – Rey’s mysterious heritage and Luke’s sudden determination to kill his nephew.
Daisy Ridley originally said she thought Rey’s parentage was “obvious” while she was filming The Force Awakens with Abrams.
Johnson’s decision to reveal Rey was the abandoned and unwanted child of drunk lowlives did not please many fans (or seem very obvious) but it is increasingly expected that Kylo Ren’s declaration will, in turn, be revealed to be false.
When Ridley heard that Abrams was on board for Episode 9 she confessed she had: “started crying immediately… I emailed J.J. saying, ‘Oh my god I am crying.’ And he goes, ‘Oh my god, me too.’”
Fans will be hoping this means Abrams will return to whatever his original plans were for Rey.
As for Luke, his depressed state on Ahch-To was bad enough, but the implication that he had violently attempted to murder Ben Solo was even more out of character.
That scene was part of the ongoing and unravelling end of his Jedi school and all his hopes for a new Jedi age. It was first shown in Rey’s force vision in Episode 7 and fans are now hoping the scene will be further expanded to try and explain Luke’s murderous moment.
There is also still the matter of Kylo and his knights (?) on that rainy killing spree.
A more traditional lineage for Rey, redemption for Luke and the introduction of the Knights of Ren would certainly go a long was to course correcting the entire franchise for a large part of the fanbase.
