The latest Disney+ outing for The Mandalorian saw Mando team up with a group of dodgy characters to rescue a fellow criminal from a New Republic prison. Set a few years after Return of the Jedi, episode 6 The Prisoner, featured some pretty neat Episode IV: A New Hope Easter Eggs.

The first to mention was a pretty good gag when team leader Mayfeld (Bill Burr) insisted that he wasn’t a stormtrooper during the days of the Empire.

Offended by the suggestion, he clarifies how his being an Imperial sharpshooter was not an oxymoron.

Back in A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi said how stormtroopers were excellent shots, only for the opposite to be proven throughout the original trilogy.

After all, stormtroopers being bad shots has been a long-running joke among Star Wars fans.

Another A New Hope Easter Egg was the introduction of Richard Ayoade’s pilot droid Q9-0.

The British star follows in the footsteps of other comic actors playing droids in recent Star Wars outings.

These include Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s L3-37 in Solo, Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO in Rogue One and Taika Waititi’s IG-11 from the first episode of The Mandalorian.

Ayoade’s robot has insect-like facial features which reflect the RA-7 protocol droid that both C-3PO and R2-D2 came across in the Jawa carrier during A New Hope.

Meanwhile, another Star Wars Episode IV Easter Egg was the inclusion of Clancy Brown’s Devaronian.

The devil-like species first appeared in A New Hope’s cantina, which was revisited in The Mandalorian episode 5.

Aside from A New Hope, there was a fun reference in The Prisoner to The Phantom Menace’s Jar Jar Binks.

This takes place when Mayfeld suggests that Mando could be a Gungan, Jar Jar’s species, under his helmet.

The crook then mimics Jar Jar’s iconic accent and speech pattern.

Meanwhile, episode 5 The Gunslinger saw The Phantom Menace paid homage to.

The opening of that chapter of The Mandalorian basically mirrored the prequel trilogy movie’s opening.

Back in the 1999 film, Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi take damage from a Trade Federation blockade as their ship departed from Naboo with Padme.

As a result, the trio have to land unexpectantly on Tatooine for repairs.

In The Gunslinger’s opening, The Mandalorian is attacked in Outer Space by another bounty hunter after him for running off with The Child, also known as Baby Yoda.

Mirroring The Phantom Menace, Mando is forced to land on Tatooine for his ship to be repaired too.

The Mandalorian is now streaming on Disney+.
