Star Wars: Avengers Endgame directors Russo brothers among favourites for new trilogy
Star Wars’ as yet unnamed new trilogy could see Marvel favourites the Russo brothers take over as directors after the departure of David Benioff and DB Weiss from the project. According to Ladbrokes, Rian Johnson, who is still in talks for his own separate trilogy, is favourite for the job, priced at 7-2. The Russo brothers, however, come in second at 4-1.
Following the epic success of Avengers: Endgame, the climax of Marvel’s Phase Three, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Disney were to want the pair to lead the mysterious trilogy.
Also in the running with bookies are Spider-Man: Far From Home and Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who worked as an Executive Producer on Endgame and is also Executive Producing Star Wars series The Mandalorian for Disney+, priced at 5-1.
Ron Howard, 8-1, Justin Lin, 9-1, and Denis Villeneuve, 10-1, are also on the list.
It is currently unclear who will take the helm on the upcoming movies, which was due to be created under the watchful creative eye of Game of Thrones duo Benioff and Weiss.

Earlier this month, it was revealed Game of Thrones’ Benioff and Weiss had quit the Star Wars trilogy, leading to uncertainty over who will take the reigns.
In a statement, the pair said: “There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said: “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers.
“We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”
Revealing he was still in talks, Johnson told Deadline: “We’re still engaged with Lucasfilm and we’ll wait and see.”
Keeping his cards close to his chest, he added: “No updates on it at this moment, but yeah.”
What has been confirmed by Disney is that there are three Christmas Star Wars release dates lined up for coming years.
December 16 2022, December 20 2024 and December 18 2026 will all see as yet untitled Star Wars movie releases.
