Star Wars Episode 9 theory: Is THIS is why Rey is looking for the Death Star?
The Star Wars Celebration gave fans what they had been waiting for since the end of The Last Jedi. Star Wars Episode 9 has finally had its title confirmed and trailer released. In the new teaser Rey (Daisy Ridley) and her friends can be seen staring out at the wreckage of the Death Star.
Where is Rey when she looks at the Death Star wreckage?
Towards the end of the teaser, Rey, Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) are accompanied by BB-8, Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) on a planet speculated to be Endor.
In The Return of the Jedi (1988), the second Death Star was positioned directly above Endor.
When it blew up, supposedly killing Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), some of the wreckage likely crashed to Endor, landing in its ocean.
Which is where the teaser for The Rise of Skywalker brings Rey and her friends.
STAR WARS: NO MORE STAR WARS? AFTER EPISODE 9 THERE IS ‘HIATUS’
Why is Rey looking for the Death Star?
As we know from The Last Jedi, Luke’s lightsaber was destroyed.
But Daisy Ridley herself commented at the Star Wars celebration that at some point during Episode 9, the lightsaber will reappear.
The theory presumes that in the heart of the wreckage remains a Kyber crystal core.
Kyber crystals are force attuned crystals which grow naturally throughout the Star Wars universe.
They are almost sentient in nature and are used in the construction of lightsabers.
The crystals are colourless, to begin with, but take on colour when united with a force sensitive person.
The Kyber crystals were also part of both Death Star’s superweapons.
So that brings us to Rey staring out at the Death Star, but the theory doesn’t stop there.
The core of the second Death Star not only houses the Kyber crystal but a remnant of Darth Sidious, aka Emperor Palpatine.
STAR WARS EPISODE 9: WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THE KNIGHTS OF REN
One Reddit user wrote: “Darth Sidious could have been continuously giving orders to the remains of the Empire.
“He could have been the one that has assembled the First Order and used Supreme Leader Snoke as a puppet to rule it and attempt to conquer the Galaxy again.”
This certainly falls in line with other theories claiming Palpatine’s consciousness bonded to an object during his death.
Though some presumed it was the helmet briefly shown during the teaser, the Death Start’s core seems far more likely.
All of this is pure speculation and to be taken with a massive grain of Cratian salt.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
