Star Wars: Is the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff movie still happening?
Sources with insider knowledge of the Star Wars franchise told Collider Lucasfilm decided to halt plans for more Star Wars spinoff movies.
Lucasfilm is focussing their efforts instead on Star Wars: Episode IX, and another trilogy of main Star Wars movies after.
However, a recent article in the Belfast Telegraph hinted a certain spinoff may still be on the table.
Is the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff movie still happening?
Maybe, and fans certainly are hopeful.
STAR WARS FLOP: COULD KATHLEEN KENNEDY BE AXED AFTER SOLO BACKLASH?
The Belfast Telegraph wrote: “The latest spinoff in the Star Wars franchise coming here in April 2019.”
George Lucas was also reported to be in Northern Ireland right before Christmas to secure the deal.
The previously rumoured Obi-Wan origin movie was in active development, according to this same source.
But those were working on the film are no longer involved, which implied to some the movie was off.
STAR WARS 9 SPOILERS: DOES THIS NEW THEORY PROVE REY IS A KENOBI?
Solo garnered mixed-positive reviews but fell short of projected box office success.
Solo: A Star Wars Story made $84.4 million during its opening weekend and grossed $192.8 million domestically (and $339.5 million worldwide) in four weeks.
This total is nothing to mock, but it is much lower than what the other Star Wars movies made.
Rogue One, the only other Star Wars spinoff, opened to $155 million and had grossed $424 million domestic by its own fourth week.
STAR WARS NEWS: ARE STAR WARS SPIN-OFF MOVIES ON HOLD AFTER SOLO FLOP?
When you take into consideration the cost to make Solo, the gap in profit suddenly seems very wide between the two spinoff movies.
Even if Solo had been a wild success, the spinoffs were already off to a rocky start.
Story issues led to reshoots on Rogue One with an entirely new director for the new scenes.
Solo itself had its own infamous issues when its original directing pair Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired during production.
HOW THE STORMTROOPER BECAME STAR WARS ICON ‘MORE POPULAR THAN DAVID’
Ron Howard was hired to replace them which resulted in expensive and extensive reshoots, even recasting Michael K. Williams for Paul Bettany as the main villain Dryden Vos.
Whether it was Star Wars fatigue, the release date, or just general disappointment with the movie itself that caused Solo’s flop the ramifications are felt throughout the galaxy.
Lucasfilm has shifted its attention back to the contemporary trilogy, and fans are still excited for Episode IX despite the middling success of Solo.
Star Wars Episode IX (the next Star Wars movie) is in cinemas December 19, 2019.
