Star Wars boss Kathleen Kennedy, under who’s watch Solo: A Star Wars Story directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord were ditched near the end of filming, and Lucasfilm are said to have had a “divergence” of creative opinions with David Benioff and DB Weiss. According Variety, sources claimed when filmmakers were asked on board the franchise in the past, they were offered some measure of creative control but new ideas they later pitches were commonly shot down by Kennedy and her team.

The publication said Benioff and Weiss and Lucasfilm executives started to “see their visions for the films diverge during meetings last summer”.

Subsequently, the studio reportedly began to take meetings with other writers, although it’s said to be unclear whether or not these were regarding the planned Weiss and Benioff trilogy or other Star Wars projects.

Express.co.uk has contacted Lucasfilm asking for comment.

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” they said in a statement. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Kennedy, meanwhile, released a statement of her own which hinted at involving Weiss and Benioff in Star Wars projects in the future.

“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,” she said. “We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

Meanwhile, the pair spoke to Deadline after quitting the trilogy, saying: “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too.

“Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was a thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changes everything.”

Benioff and Weiss were set to explore a new Star Wars story in an upcoming trilogy which was expected to launch in 2022.

The films are slated to explore the tale after the legend of Luke Skywalker and bosses have yet to confirm who will be taking over from the Game of Thrones duo.

At present, the fate of the movies hangs in the balance as it’s unknown what direction things will take following Benioff and Weiss’ departure.

Elsewhere, Star Wars fans still have plenty to look forward to with The Rise of Skywalker release growing ever closer.

The culmination of the sequel trilogy will arrive in cinemas in December after the final trailer dropped earlier this month.

While the clip teased many exciting things — not least the possible confirmation of Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) possessing the Sith dagger — it’s a sighting outside of the trailer which has fans talking this week.

Hayden Christensen stepped (almost literally) into the world of the new films when he made a surprise appearance at Disneyland Resort’s Galaxy’s Edge on Tuesday.

Naturally, the sighting, which saw him posing at the Star Wars attraction, sparked a frenzy among fans who are convinced his reintroduction to the franchise is on its way.

Commenting on the pictures, which were shared by Star Wars’ Twitter account with their 4.2 million followers, fans shared their belief the appearance confirmed the rumour Christensen will be reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker.

“Can’t wait to see him in TROS in seven weeks,” one said, while another quipped: “King of being in TROS.”

Other social media users have pointed out that Christensen’s current age would fit well with the chronology of the movies.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas December 19.
