Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is fast approaching UK cinemas and fans are delighted to see what director J.J. Abrams has cooked up. But Lucasfilm have enlisted Rian Johnson, who wowed fans with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, to make three whole new Star Wars films. His work must have impressed producers – and now he has opened on the timeline of those films.

Rian Johnson is currently promoting his Agatha Christie-inspired movie, Knives Out, starring Avengers star Chris Evans and James Bond himself, Daniel Craig.

The writer-director is pretty keen on getting new projects inbetween his Star Wars adventures, and has maintained that he is involved to the Star Wars universe – though whether he will be directing the new adventures is unclear.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, however, Johnson gave away a little bit of information about the timelines of the latest trilogy.

He said: “The truth is they’re still figuring out their schedule, their game plan.

“If it’s possible for me to squeeze in another film before or while working on that, I will.”

Johnson has not mentioned what type of film he would want to squeeze in before working on the new trilogy, so there may even be a chance for another stand alone Star Wars film – if the timing is right.

Otherwise, Johnson may get a chance to make another Knives Out – or something similar – which will likely impress fans after dazzling critical reviews.

So far, Knives Out has 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

While his comments may not give any definite times for the next Star Wars trilogy, we know that he is definitely keen to get going with Star Wars – even if he tries to fit in a completely separate project in the midst of it all.

He told The Observer earlier this year: “We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy characters.

“What does that look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it.

“I know the way that I’m coming at it, and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’s films, is figuring out, ‘What’s the next step?’

“It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of ‘Star Wars’ is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

Clearly, fans have reason to be pumped about the next Star Wars trilogy, as it will bring together a whole new side to the Star Wars universe which is as yet unknown.

Of course, never wanting to be too far from Star Wars, Frank Oz has a special cameo in Johnson’s new film, Knives Out, meaning there will be a little taste of Yoda in an Agatha Christie-inspired world.

Knives Out is in cinemas on November 29, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in cinemas on December 19.
