Star Wars: Rian Johnson reveals DOUBTS about whether his own trilogy will happen

Many fans were very unhappy after The Last Jedi. Their fury was compounded by news that the controversial director was being given even more Star Wars opportunities with an apparent carte blanche to create a new trilogy. There have been theories before that Johnson’s plans might have been put on the back burner but he has always confidently asserted everything was still going ahead. Until now.

Fans are still unhappy with the deaths of Snoke and Luke Skywalker, bot hof which happened too early in the trilogy for many.

Almost two years later, the heat of the backlash and bitter split in the fandom has not died down. There are many who do not want to see the director anywhere near the franchise again.

Johnson has been busy the past few weeks promoting new comedy thriller Knives Out.

Naturally, he still receives questions about the Sequel Trilogy, which comes to its grand climax in December. But he was also asked how plans were going on his own spin-off and the answer may surprise many.

Johnson said: “Well, we’ll see. I’m still talking to Lucasfilm, they’re figuring out what they’re doing and we’ll see what happens. But I’d be thrilled if it happens, and I’m working on my own stuff too.”

It’s just a few lines but loaded with information.

This is not a ringing confirmation, with no room for doubt. Firstly, Johnson crucially says “if it happens,” which means it is by no mean guaranteed.

Secondly, he clarifies Disney and Lucasfilm still havent decide exactly what is coming in the next phases of the Star Wars universe.

The director is far more assertive when he talks about his feelings about The Rise of Skywalker.

These comments, at least, will please fans on both sides of the divide.

Johnson said: “I am so excited. I get to just be a fan again. I watched that last trailer and I was just like, squealing at my screen.

“I cannot wait to get my popcorn, sit down and see the end of this story. It’s gonna be great.”

Despite his absolute pride and unapologetic belief in the choices he made for The Last Jedi, Johnson has said he will not mind if JJ Abrams changes anything for the final episode.
