Superman cast: Is Henry Cavill still playing Superman?

Hidden away in a Variety report about the delayed release of The Flash movie is a tidbit of information.

The detail, which is written almost as a throwaway line, confirms what many have speculated over for weeks.

The report reads Warner Bros is “not currently moving forward with Batman and Superman movies featuring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively.

“It is expected to recast the Dark Knight with a different actor for director Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman solo outing.”

What does this mean for Henry Cavill?

Even as far back as last month, sources close to Warner Bros were claiming Henry would not be returning.

This is in spite of Warner Bros trying to get him to make a cameo in the upcoming Shazam! movie.

Cavill, who starred in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman and last year’s Justice League, is believed to be hanging up the red cape after finding success in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Is Henry Cavill still playing Superman?

Cavill is currently occupied with his role in Netflix’s The Witcher.

But until Warner Bros speaks, rumours he will be leaving the role as Superman should be taken with a grain of salt as rumours are wont to pick up steam.

The source who confirmed this has not been named and the studio has yet to release any statement regarding the future of Batman and Superman.

But the speculation about Cavill’s future with the DC Comics extended universe began weeks ago, culminating in Cavill himself posting a cryptic Instagram video.

At the time, The Hollywood Reporter quoted another unnamed source who said: “‘Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.

“There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.”

While a second source suggested the studio is hoping to hit a ‘reset’ button after a string of failures and lack of critical acclaim among the DC films.

WB may be looking to shake up its comic book-based franchises to emulate the progress of rival studios.

There is no shortage of WB superhero movies.

Aquaman is next on the list, with a December release, followed by Shazam and the Wonder Woman sequel.

Separate to the DCEU, the studio also has the standalone Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix, the Supergirl movie, Birds of Prey, and Suicide Squad 2 with the newly appointed James Gunn.

No one can be sure about the future of Affleck’s Batman or Cavill’s Superman until the studio speaks.
