The former Fifty Shades of Grey star takes centre stage in the retelling of the cult favourite, also starring Tilda Swinton.

If the new footage is anything to go by, it seems Luca Guadagnino’s movie will be slow-burning and high in gut-wrenching tension.

Suspiria has been given an R-rating, meaning its more gruesome moments can only be alluded to in the trailer, but it certainly looks like it’ll be every bit as horrifying as early hype has suggested.

Earlier this year a sequence from the film was shown at CinemaCon and left audiences completely rattled.

“It’s one of the most f**ked up things I’ve ever seen at #CinemaCon,” Collider’s Steven Weintraub tweeted afterwards.

“People at my table turned away from the screen. All I can say is it’s beyond extreme and gross and I need to see more.”

Peter Sciretta posted: “First clip from Suspiria invokes a dancer being thrown around like a rag doll telekinetically in a mirrored rehearsal space, bones breaking, becoming a contorted mess.

“Very gruesome and hard to watch. This film will make most people feel uneasy. #CinemaCon.”

Johnson has made no secret of the impact the filming process had on her wellbeing, telling Elle magazine it “f**ked me up so much I needed therapy”.

She also recently said that playing a dancer proved to be terrifying in its own right.

“I trained on and off for about a year before we started filming, but I’m not a professional dancer,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It was terrifying.”

There’s no grand dance sequence in the 1977 version but Guadagnino explained: “In Dario Argento’s film, you see mostly lessons; there is not a grand dance moment in the movie.

“We felt that dance needed to be part of the process of witchcraft.

“That performance builds towards the greater ritual that is at the core of the film.”

Suspiria is out on November 2.
