The Girl in the Spider's Web reviews: What do critics say about new Dragon Tattoo film?
Lisbeth Salander has become synonymous with female-powered revenge.
The character came to life in Stieg Larsson Millennium series of novels.
After Larsson’s unexpected passing in 2004, the writer David Lagercrantz added another sequel to the scholastic ouevre with The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
Now made into a movie (a soft reboot of David Fincher’s 2011 Girl with the Dragon Tatoo) The Girl in the Spider’s Web hits cinemas on November 21, 2018.
Here’s what critics had to say about the film:
As of writing, The Girl in the Spider’s Web Rotten Tomatoes score is a solid 68 percent.
With mixed but favourable reviews, the movie is high on the list of must-see movies this November.
How the movie fits into the series is complicated, but hasn’t seemed to impact reviews.
IndieWire’s Katie Erbland review is titled: “Claire Foy Is the Best Lisbeth Salander Yet in a Sequel Too Muddled to Leave Its Own Mark” and gave it a C+
Despite the middling score, she wrote: “Lisbeth is never going to be cuddly or sunny, but that doesn’t mean she has to be robotic or impossible to read.
“That’s something that Foy and Alvarez clearly understand, and the result is a heroine not only worth cheering for, but one worth loving.”
Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: “It is edgy and action-packed, and Alvarez’ direction keeps the tension high through a slew of ever-more-improbable threats to Lisbeth and her allies.”
Giving it three out of five stars for Empire, Alex Godfrey wrote: “An often effective reboot, this does everything you’d expect, but that’s a real shame.
“Lisbeth might be a nomad, but she doesn’t feel at home here.”
Also giving it a score of three out of five was Digital Spy’s Ian Sandwell.
Sandwell wrote: “Anchored by Foy’s captivating performance, the movie overcomes some notable flaws to suggest there’s plenty of promise in this take on Salander.”
For Forbes, Scott Mendelson wrote: “The film is less focused on men who hurt women and more concerned about men and women who threaten the world order.”
William Bibiani, writing for TheWrap, said: “Alvarez’s film isn’t a harsh character study or a brutal indictment of a misogynistic society.
“It’s a fast-moving thriller about nuclear launch codes, and there’s hardly any time for little luxuries like character development and themes.”
In contrast, Variety writer Jay Weissberg wrote: “It was probably inevitable that Hollywood would neuter the best elements of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” franchise, but did the producers really need to shift it into a commonplace cross between a superhero flick and James Bond?”
Tim Grierson of Screen International wrote: “Claire Foy proves to be a perfectly respectable Lisbeth Salander, but like “Spider’s Web” itself, the elaborate effort put forth hardly seems worth it.”
Praising Foy, The Times’ Demetrios Matheou wrote: “Here Foy perfectly captures Salander’s monosyllabic repression, as well as the no-nonsense physicality, trusty Taser by her side.”
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is out in cinemas on November 21, 2018.
