The Greatest Showman: Hugh Jackman responds to ‘SNIFFY’ chart dominance BACKLASH

Back in Christmas 2017, The Greatest Showman hit cinemas and received a green splat from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. After a disappointing opening weekend, the film went on to become a huge box office success. However, this is nothing in comparison to the popularity of The Greatest Showman’s film soundtrack. The record was the best-selling album of 2018 in the UK and US and is still in the charts.

He continued: “If I invented chocolate ice cream and people came up to me and said ‘I hate chocolate’, then alright – that’s OK.

“There’s loads of people who love it. In the end, I’m a storyteller.

“I’m an actor who tells stories. Some people didn’t like The Greatest Showman and that’s fine with me.

“It meant a lot to a lot of people.”

Jackman, who was promoting his 2019 live tour, added: “If you spend a lot of time on something and nobody likes it, then that’s a little difficult because you think ‘Wow, I’ve really gone off track here. I really thought this would connect and it didn’t.’

“Of course people are sniffy; it’s quite commercial, it’s down the middle, there are people who wanted us to do different things with the character than what we were doing.”

Meanwhile, Edith Bowman told Express.co.uk that critics didn’t connect with The Greatest Showman.

She said: “I’m a film fan, not a film critic. I never profess to be. And so that’s sometimes something I love when critics get it wrong. They didn’t connect with the film; didn’t really get it. And then over time this audience built and built and built.”
