The Meg 2: Will there be a sequel to The Meg? All we know so far

When The Meg swam to cinemas this summer, many anticipated the shark movie to be a flop.

Instead, it proved to be one of the late-summers biggest success stories.

The Meg starred Jason Statham as its hero, Jonas Taylor, and a massive CGI shark known as the Megalodon as its villain.

Though it’s well known the real threat to the oceans is humans, The Meg still profited from the widespread fear of the creatures that lurk in the depths of the seas.

Will there be a Meg 2?

Yes, and production has just begun on the sequel.

Gravity Pictures, the Chinese distribution firm, has confirmed there are plans to make the sequel.

The movie is based on a novel series by Steve Alten.

Reporting from the US-China Entertainment Summit, Deadline confirmed the sequel from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Catherine Xujun Ying, the producer, was asked if there were plans for a Meg sequel.

She replied: “That’s definitely the plan.”

Adding a caveat, she said the production was in “the very early stages” so a release date for The Meg 2 is far off.

Deadline also reported that the producer Belle Avery has already purchased the rights to the novel series.

Not to mention China has Meg-themed amusement park rides in the works, expanding on the franchise even further.

As of writing, The Meg is the most successful US/Chinese co-production, raking in a profit of $414.3 million ($527.8m).

The Meg notoriously cut most of its overtly gorey scenes in order to keep a PG-13 rating.

What does this mean for the sequel?

It’s likely any subsequent movies will also be more family friendly, to allow the biggest possible target audience to see the films.

The Meg could also lean into the gore, with a higher rating but a more serious and older audience.

The book series itself has three novels, but the movies could easily spin into a franchise as huge as Fast and the Furious.

With the right blend of action, cheese, and underwater frights, who know what is in store for The Meg’s future.

Whether Jason Statham would return remains unconfirmed, but the actor is known to be loyal to franchises.

The Meg will be available on DVD from December 10, 2018.
