The Princess Bride is an adventure story about Westley (played by Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright), and was directed by Rob Reiner. The movie chronicles the pair’s quest across England in the middle ages, coming across fantasy characters along their way. But while many thought the film would remain in its place in history, US publication Variety published a profile of the original film’s producer Norman Lear that has brought the fandom to its knees. In the article, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s chief executive, Tony Vinciquerra teased there might be fresh life for the epic motion picture just yet.

“Very famous people whose names I won’t use,” he began, “but they want to redo The Princess Bride …

“Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things with Norman.”

Original star Cary was one of the first to comment on the news, saying: “There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world.

“It would be a pity to damage this one.”

Craig Mazin then commented: “Indeed. No disrespect to Norman Lear, but The Princess Bride will always be the primary work of William Goldman, with additional contributions from Rob Reiner and his cast and crew. Period the end.”

“I’m rarely a ‘don’t remake this’ kind of guy,” Franklin Leonard chimed in. “Because I make an effort to be near-pathologically optimistic, and I try very hard to believe that there may be some genius version of a remake that I lack the vision to imagine.

“All that said, don’t remake the Princess Bride.”

And fans were even more frustrated, as one person wrote: “A remake of the The Princess Bride is a line that movie fans aren’t willing to cross.”

“Look, there is no point in remaking The Princess Bride. We already know what became of Buttercup,” another said.

A third joked: “Me: *Hears that Sony wants to remake The Princess Bride.* Also me: Prepare to die.”

While a fourth raged: “To the people who want to remake The Princess Bride: I have a lot of questions. Number one: how dare you?”
