The Princess Bride remake: Fans react as reboot of classic film announced

The Princess Bride is one of Rob Reiner’s best loved films, and is considered a classic movie that is a must-see for film fans. The film follows Buttercup and Wesley, lovers who fight to stay together against all odds. But the idea of remaking this classic movie has fans and celebs on edge.

It all started when Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO set the rumour mill in motion about a potential remake of 1987 cult classic The Princess Bride.

Tony Vinciquerra, the CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, spoke to Variety about Norman Lear, the famous TV producer with whom thousands of big names want to work.

Lear also produced The Princess Bride, leading Tony to say: “We have so many people coming to us saying, ‘We want to remake this show or that show.’

“Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo ‘The Princess Bride.’

“Some people want to do animated versions of some of the sitcoms.

“Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things with Norman.”

A simple comment like this set the Princess Bride fans in a swirl of confusion and anger, with many furious at the idea of remaking such a classic – for TV or film.

Twitter was filled with shocked fans speaking out about the film, many using cleaver clips from the film to illustrate their point.

One fan tweeted: “DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES REMAKE THE PRINCESS BRIDE!! I know every word of this movie DO NOT TAKE THIS AWAY FROM ME!! #PrincessBride”

Another said: “I’ve managed not to delete any friends over #Brexit but anyone who agrees wit the proposed #PrincessBride remake will be on thin ice!”

A third added: “Surely they’re having a laugh at the possibility of remaking #PrincessBride, aren’t they? No one else could play grandpa like our man Pete.”

This, of course, related to Peter Falk, who played the grandpa in the film and is best known for playing TV detective Columbo.

But the most interesting response to the film is that of Cary Elwes, who played Wesley in the original move of The Princess Bride.

Elwes replied to the tweet from Variety with a simple comment: “There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world.

“It would be a pity to damage this one.”

Other celebrities took to Twitter to share their fury, with Jamie Lee Curtis, who is married to one of the film’s stars, Christopher Guest, said: “Oh really? Well, I married the six fingered man, obviously why we have stayed together for 35 years and there is only ONE The Princess Bride and it’s William Goldman and @robreiner’s.

“‘Life is pain highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something!’”

The latter comment in her tweet is a quote from the film, said by Cary Elwes himself.

Even politician Ted Cruz weighed in, with actor Seth Rogen adding that he “would never dare” adapting the original.

Perhaps the outcry from fans will be enough to halt a remake, with one fan asking for them simply to re-release the old version for fans to enjoy again.
