Despite poor reviews, fans are still heading to the cinema to catch Hardy’s Spider-Man spin-off.

Venom took $35.7 million at the US box office this weekend but remained at No 1 for the second week in a row.

Meanwhile, Gosling’s First Man had a disappointing opening, only debuting at No 3 with $16.5 million.

The film was held off by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s A Star is Born with $28 million.

Meanwhile, Bad Times At The El Royale debuted at No 7, taking a modest $7.2 million.

UK figures are yet to be released for last weekend, but it seems likely Venom will hold the No 1 spot since it’s remained so globally, taking its worldwide total to $235.3 million.

First Man, which currently has 88% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, arrives in time for next year’s 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing.

Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong in the likely Oscars contender, which was directed by La La Land’s Damien Chazelle.

Last year the 33-year-old became the first filmmaker ever to win the Best Director Oscar.

While Gosling is expected to get a Best Actor nod for First Man at next year’s Academy Awards, alongside Cooper for A Star Is Born.

First Man’s running time is two hours and twenty-one minutes and Chazelle used IMAX cameras for the Moon Landing scenes.

A follow-up was teased in an end credits scene which featured Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady.

Marvel fans will know he becomes Venom’s arch-nemesis, Carnage.

It’s even possible that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could crossover with the symbiotes in a future movie.

Venom and First Man are out now.
