Top Gun 2 Maverick: Tom Cruise teases an ‘EMOTIONAL, hard, never-before-seen’ sequel

It’s been 34 years since Tom Cruise first jetted off in Top Gun. And now the long-awaited sequel is set to land in cinemas this summer. Cruise famously does his own stunts in action franchises like Mission Impossible and it’s just the same for Top Gun: Maverick.

Scenes have been shot of Cruise flying real fighter jets.

And now he’s teased just what fans can expect in Top Gun 2.

Speaking with Empire, the 57-year-old said: “I said to the studio, ‘You don’t know how hard this movie’s going to be. No-one’s ever done this before,

“‘There’s never been an aerial sequence shot this way.’”

The star added: “I don’t know if there ever will be again, to be honest.”

Top Gun 2 also sees the return of Val Kilmer, reprising his role from the original as Iceman.

Real name Tom Kazansky has become an Admiral, while interestingly Cruise’s Maverick is still just a captain and flight instructor.

The film also stars Miles Teller as Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw.

Teller’s character is the son of Maverick’s pal Goose, who perished in Top Gun.

While Jennifer Connelly stars as Penny Benjamin, the love interest of Cruise’s character.

She’s a single mother and owner of a bar.

However, there is one character from the 1986 original who is controversially missing.

Maverick’s love interest in Top Gun was Charlie Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis.

The 62-year-old claims she wasn’t asked to return because she doesn’t look right for Hollywood now.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, she said: “I’m old and I’m fat and I look age appropriate for what my age is and that is not what that whole scene is about.

“To me, I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.”

Top Gun Maverick’s synopsis reads: “After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

“When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: ‘Rooster,’ the son of Maverick’s late best friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, known as ‘Goose’.

“Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”

Top Gun Maverick is set for release in UK cinemas on July 17, 2020.
