Top Gun 2 release date: When does Top Gun 2 come out in UK?

Tom Cruise donned his fighter pilot uniform once more as he brought his Maverick character back to life at a military base in San Diego on Thursday.

UK fans will have to wait a while to see the film once it is released though, as Top Gun: Maverick will be released on July 12, 2019.

The sequel will be set in the present day as the pilots deal with drone warfare and fighter jets.

This time, Maverick will also have to contend with a cocky female pilot called Penny Benjamin.

The grown-up son of Goose (Riot FKA Wrigley) is set to clash with Maverick too.

The original movie was set at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego and Cruise and long-time collaborator Jerry Bruckheimer have already revealed how the sequel will continue the story.

Cruise said: “Stylistically it’s going to be same. Aviators are back. The need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines.

“It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one… but a progression for Maverick.”

The second Top Gun will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has worked on other films including Oblivion and Tron:Legacy.

The film was originally produced by Tony Scott, who is the late Ridley Scott’s brother.

However, he died in August 2012 after sadly taking his own life.

The script has been co-written by The Hunger Games film writer Peter Craig and The Jungle Book writer Justin Marks.

The original Top Gun followed the story of Maverick, a young cocky pilot who was sent to train at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School.

He has tense relations with fellow pilot Iceman (Val Kilmer) and falls in love with his flight instructor Charlie Blackwood (Kelly MCGillis).

He is racked with guilt after his co-pilot Goose dies after ejecting from his plane.
