Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino knows three players are leaving claims Tim Sherwood
Tottenham were beaten on penalties by Colchester
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino knows he is set to lose three players next year, ex-Spurs boss Tim Sherwood believes.
Tottenham were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night to the lowest-ranked team in the competition.
Colchester beat the Premier League side on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Essex.
The defeat was another setback for Pochettino, who has endured a torrid start to the season.
In the last ten days alone, he has seen his Spurs side throw away a 2-0 lead against Olympiacos in the Champions League, before losing against Leicester after going a goal ahead.
And Sherwood believes that uncertainty over three players futures is leading Pochettino to look to the long-term rather than focus on this season.
Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweirld and Jan Vertonghen are all expected to leave the club at the end of their contacts next summer, in what would be a huge financial blow to the Lilywhites.
“He certainly knows three of them are not [staying],” Sherwood said on The Debate.
Tottenham brought Christian Eriksen off the bench on Tuesday
“By the looks of it, Christian Eriksen, [Toby] Alderweirld and [Jan] Vertonghen are going for nothing, which will hurt the club.
“It’s not good [for the dressing room].
“But that’s the situation they now find themselves in.
“If they [three players mentioned] want a move to a bigger club, they’re going to have to perform and perform well.
“The onus is on them to perform now, and they’re all professionals.
“I know Jan and I know Christian, and they’re good lads, you don’t have to worry about them, they’ll get their heads down and perform for the team.
“But the team knows, and Mauricio knows, that they’re not going to be around next year, and maybe he’s looking at the long-term. But he should be looking at the short-term.”
Spurs had the option to sell Eriksen during the summer after interest from Manchester United, but they opted to keep him in an attempt to convince him into a new contract.
