Trump urges comedian's firing over Ivanka slur
Donald Trump has suggested that comedian Samantha Bee should be fired for using an obscenity to describe his daughter Ivanka.
Bee has apologised for insulting Ms Trump, a top White House adviser, with a profanity on her television show.
Mr Trump called the slur “horrible language” and spoke of “double standards” in the US media.
He tweeted on Friday morning: “Why aren’t they firing no talent Samantha Bee for the horrible language used on her low ratings show? A total double standard but that’s O.K., we are Winning, and will be doing so for a long time to come!”
The incident came just days after ABC cancelled the show Roseanne after comedian Roseanne Barr wrote a racist tweet about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.
Bee had attacked Ms Trump over the immigration policy of her father during her TBS show Full Frontal.
She called Ms Trump a “feckless c***” as she urged the White House adviser to speak to her father about a US policy of separating undocumented immigrant children from their families.
“Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to f***ing stop it,” she said.
Bee, 48, a former correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, admitted to crossing a line with the comment and said she regrets it.
She tweeted: “I would like to sincerely apologise to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night.
“It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”
Her network, TBS, said “it was our mistake, too,” adding that Bee had taken the right step in apologising.
They did not say whether there would be any consequences for Bee or the show, which is taped and not aired live.
Before the apology, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, had called Bee’s language “vile and vicious”.
She said executives at TBS and corporate parent Time Warner needed to demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of the administration “would not be condoned”.
Like the president, some in the US compared the cases of Barr, a favourite among conservatives, and Bee to suggest double standards in the media.
Some conservatives have suggested Bee should be met with the same fate as Barr, while liberals wondered if Bee’s use of language was any worse than some used by Mr Trump.
Ari Fleischer, former press secretary to former president George W Bush, wrote on Twitter: “There’s no uprising against Bee. Why? Because she is a liberal. Because the MSM [mainstream media] protects Obama and his aides, but not Trump. The hypocrisy is sickening.”
Comedian Marie Connor wrote: “I dream of a life where we hold our president to a higher standard than we hold comedians”.
