Venom age rating: Does Venom have an age rating? How old do you have to be?

Tom Hardy adopts another mystifying accent as Eddie Brock, the investigative journalist down on his luck and looking to boost his career.

Along comes Venom, and Brock’s life is forever altered when the symbiote-parasite takes up residence inside Brock’s body.

The story is not your typical positive superhero movie – a story of a guy who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes a better version of himself.

Instead, Venom is a tale of two beings in one body, a Jekyll and Hyde situation, where you’re never quite sure who is going to win.

So, does Venom have an age rating?

As of writing, all of the trailers for Venom have been given a rating of 12A by the British Board of Film Classification.

However, the movie itself has yet to receive a classification.

The American rating is likely to be R, which means the UK will follow suit in a 15 certificate.

Going for the higher age rating may allow the movie to go to a darker place, which given the tone of the trailers seems likely.

However, it could also prevent swathes of potential fans from seeing the move in cinemas, putting a downer on the Sony-Marvel endeavour.

How old do you have to be to see Venom?

Venom will likely live alongside the darker Marvel movies, like Deadpool, so plan your cinema trip accordingly.

A 15 rating would mean no one younger than 15 would be able to see the Venom movie in the cinema.

The categories the BBFC takes into account are discrimination, drugs, imitative behaviour, language, nudity, sex, threat, and violence.

If Deadpool can be taken as the closest analogous movie, the rating would likely centre around language and violence.

Like Deadpool (and Deadpool 2) Venom is a far darker take on the superhero genre.

However, where the two movies may differ is the tone in the Ryan Reynolds vehicle – where cartoonish humour and sarcasm, while raunchy, help to allay the threat of violence within the movie.

Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock and Venom seemingly without an ounce of the self-aware irony of Deadpool.

And Venom doesn’t seem to feature much humour at all, resulting in it perhaps feeling even darker than the merc-with-a-mouth’s two solo movies.

Venom will be released in the UK and USA on October 5, 2018.
