Venom Box Office: How much money has Venom made at the box office?

Sony can rest easy – their gamble on the Marvel character has paid off.

The Tom Hardy helmed super-anti-hero movie has had a buzz around it since its first glimpse last December.

In the months following, fans and critics alike have parsed every available trailer and clip for details.

While some pointed to Tom Hardy’s accents, once again, for their off-kilter quality, others focussed on the tone of the film, trying to predict how it would work as a whole.

How much money did Venom make at the box office?

With its domestic (North American) weekend still going, the whole weekend profit is an estimate.

However, that estimate is high.

According to Deadline, Venom has an estimated £59.7 to £61 million ($77m to $80m) weekend ahead of itself.

Initial estimates, according to Box Office Mojo, were at £42 to 45m ($55-60m)

VENOM REVIEWS: WHAT DID THE CRITICS SAY ABOUT VENOM?

The Friday night opening garnered £24.6m ($32.3m) alone.

Venom has easily beat Paranormal Activity 3‘s opening day of £20m ($26.3m) from October 2011.

The Marvel comic adaptation by Sony will likely easily clear Gravity‘s £42m ($55.7m) opening weekend record as well, from October in 2013.

Not only are these projected profits impressive in their own right, but they push Venom firmly into the black.

VENOM MID-CREDIT SCENE: WHO IS CARNAGE?

The studio claims Venom’s production cost net £76.2m ($100m) before the cost of prints and ads.

Deadline reported the figure was closer to £88.4m ($116m) with Georgia tax credits.

A total gross of around £152.4m ($200m) is needed for Venom to break even.

Given the movie is projected to gross £133.4m ($175m) globally for its opening weekend, this should be an easy hurdle to clear.

VENOM: WAS STAN LEE IN VENOM? WHERE DOES HE APPEAR?

Venom debuted to an unprecedented 4,250 locations, which already gives it the widest October release of all-time.

The first weekend in October seems to yield high payoffs, particularly for Venom.

The movie headed to the box office without much competition.

Despite the rows on Twitter between Lady Gaga fans and Venom fans, the target demographics for the two films are different enough to allow them to run simultaneously without damaging each other’s prospects.

For Sony to continue its hopes for its own Marvel-based universe, Venom needed to excel at the box office.

While the critical reception has been mixed at best, the commercial success indicates there’s hope for more Venom movies.

Venom is now playing in cinemas.
