Set in the 1990s, the Carol Danvers solo caper gives the opportunity to bring back Phil Coulson – who featured in more than 100 episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a number of MCU movies.

He was killed in 2012’s The Avengers by Loki but was brought back to life using treatments developed by Project T.A.H.I.T.I, courtesy of Nick Fury.

It’s Fury, actor Clark Gregg has said, who he will rub the wrong way in Captain Marvel.

“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded!”

Of his plot in the upcoming movie, he teased: “He’s a relatively new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Director Fury so angry.

“The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”

Gregg, as well as Samuel L Jackson, has been digitally de-aged for the new film, which has recently wrapped up filming.

The cast is fronted by Brie Larson in the title role; and it’s her big, long-awaited introduction to the MCU after being alluded to in the end credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War.

Once she’s been established in her own vehicle, she’ll then be seen joining the fightback against Thanos in next year’s Avengers 4 – due for release in April 2019.

She recently said: “When it’s funny, it is funny, but also when there’s deep emotional things happening, it’s real.

“So I was able to bring some of those same things that I’ve brought to full dramatic roles into this, which I’m really proud of because I think it will really set this film apart.”

She added: “I never saw myself doing something like this, mostly because I like being anonymous.

“I like disappearing into characters, and I always felt like if I was out in the public eye too much, it potentially limits you in the future.”

Carol Danvers is known to be the most powerful superhero in the entire Marvel roster, so it’s far to say the events of her own movie will be quite something.

Captain Marvel is out on March 8, 2019.
