Plastic Fantastic: Get this season’s hottest vinyl trend

The surprising hit of the runway was the integration of wipe clean, vinyl fabrics into high end designer shows.

Rubberised and plastic materials were worked into chic and feminine silhouettes at the likes of Calvin Klein, Chanel, Valentino and Balenciaga, where they became sleek suiting and pencil dresses.

This fantastically plastic trend covered everything from knee high boots to trench coats and dresses.

Here we pick our favourite pieces from the high street and show you how to wear the trend with a vintage twist.

Catwalk Trend: Plastic coated trench coats are big for S/S’18

Plastic trench coats were big news on the catwalk for SS18.

Naturally the rubberised texture makes this style great for early Spring showers.

While any high street stores opted for black or see through options, this sugar pink plastic trench from ASOS is a more feminine way to wear the trend.

Paired with a pencil skirt in fashion forward gingham, from Marks and Spencer, this look gives the trend a vintage twist.

Model wears: Pink coat, £90, Asos; Cardigan, £80, Boden; Skirt, £39.50, Marks and Spencer; Shoes, £22.99, Lamoda; Earrings, £15, Simply Be

Catwalk Trend: try plastic accessories

Plastic accessories are an easy way to buy into the look.

Look for quick and cost effective high street purchases such as a iridescent plastic tote, or plastic boots.

These fun accessories will help you give a nod to the trend without a huge investment purchase.

We kept the retro feel by going for ultra feminine silhouettes such as this beautiful pink block colour dress from Jasper Conran’s range at Debenhams.

Check coat, £65, Asos; Dress, £65, J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams; Shoes, £23.99, Lamoda; Bag, £17.99, New Look; Earrings, £12, Simply Be

Catwalk Trend: team a vinyl skirt with on trend faux fur

More designers than ever before are playing with latex for their catwalk collections.

The soft and supple fabric can drape easily and of course hugs curves.

The high street vinyl versions make for great pencil skirts.

This high shine pink skirt from Boohoo with front zip detailing is a great way to try the trend.

We’ve ensured this look retains its glamour with this beautiful River Island, faux fur jacket.

Model wears: Jacket, £120, River Island; Top, £55, Precis Petite; Skirt, £10, Boohoo; Shoes, £27.99; earrings, £5.99, both New Look

Catwalk Trend: Look for rubberised fabrics

While brands were quick to trial vinyl trousers, they are definitely a trend for the brave.

Looking to dip your toe into plastic fantastic?

Then try these rubberised trousers.

In a soft pink and tailored cut they’re a very chic option.

Teamed with a perspex heel and a pretty pussy bow blouse for a perfect day outfit.

Catwalk Trend: Mix plastic with softer pieces

The vinyl trend can be seen as a little feisty.

Keep colours soft and within a pastel palette to make this look pretty rather than punky.

Pair plastic coated pieces with softer items, like this fluffy Marks and Spencer’s jumper to add a more relaxed vibe.

We love this thigh skimming skirt from Boohoo which looks far more expensive than it’s actual £20 retail cost.

Model wears: Jumper, £76, Marks and Spencer; Skirt, £20, Boohoo; Boots, £55, V by Very; Bag, £15.99, New Look; Earrings, £13, River Island; Ring, £80; necklace, £70, both Lola Rose

Catwalk Trend: Try mixing matte with metallic

While matte plastic fabrics have been reproduced across the high street, don’t discount metallic versions for Spring.

Make metallics for day by teaming a sleeveless top over a cosy roll neck – perfect for early Spring weather.

This peplum, metallic pink top is perfect for adding a touch of shimmer to a daytime outfit. Team with a pencil skirt to highlight your waist and lengthen legs.

Model wears: Top, £18; skirt, £18, both Missguided; Roll neck, £39, Kettlewell Colours; Shoes, £75, Hotter; Earrings, £8, Simply Be; Watch, £135, Ted Baker

Whatever you do this season, keep fantastic in plastic.
