The actor, who has previously starred in Ready Player One and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was recently confirmed to be playing Talos, a Skrull.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel on his US chatshow last night, the Australian actor, 49, said: “They [Skrulls] will be a beautiful green, you’re gonna see some purple highlights in there.

“You know your way around comics well, right? So you know we can shapeshift, we can do whatever we want to do.”

The Skrulls are one of the most fearsome villains in the Marvel comics, and Talos will be seen having embedded himself within S.H.I.E.L.D.

The presumption is that he’ll be instrumental in how Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) loses an eye – he says in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that he lost it the last time he trusted anyone, so it certainly checks out that Talos could be responsible.

Mendelsohn is no stranger to playing a villain, and told Kimmel: “What you’ve got to remember is… you guys [Americans] were raised on freedom and hope and liberty, we’re [Australians] raised on ‘go to jail!’

“That’s how we started, so we learn that cops and robbers stuff pretty young!”

He added: “It’s awkward with kid fans and the parents; that can be awkward because they’ll be like, ‘get away from the guy that built the Death Star, don’t look at him.’”

Brie Larson takes the title role of Carol Danvers in the movie, and recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the balance between humour and well-rooted drama.

“That is something that is really exciting to me about this film: We did not cut corners on that stuff,” she revealed.

“Like, when it’s funny, it is funny, but also when there’s deep emotional things happening, it’s real.

“So I was able to bring some of those same things that I’ve brought to full dramatic roles into this, which I’m really proud of because I think it will really set this film apart.”

On Carol’s character, she teased: ““You have this Kree part of her that’s unemotional, that is an amazing fighter and competitive.

“Then there’s this human part of her that is flawed but is also the thing that she ends up leading by. It’s the thing that gets her in trouble, but it’s also the thing that makes her great.

“And those two sides warring against each other is what makes her her.”

Captain Marvel is out on March 8, 2019.
