Liverpool news: James Milner makes retirement admission and plans for future

Milner has shone for Liverpool this season with the Reds having won all six of their matches.

That includes five in the Premier League with the other win coming in the opening match of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain.

Milner netted Liverpool’s second in the 3-2 win over the Ligue 1 giants with the versatile 32-year-old also scoring a spot-kick against Crystal Palace earlier in the season.

The former Manchester City and Leeds man has impressed in a competitive Liverpool midfield with Fabinho still to make his debut for the Reds.

And Milner, who retired from international duty in 2016, has admitted he’s not sure when he will hang up his boots completely.

“It’s difficult to know when you are still playing,” Milner told FourFourTwo.

“There are times when I fancy being a manager, times when I fancy being a pundit and times when I fancy not being anywhere near football when I finish.

“Managers don’t get much time at all these days, and it also takes such a long time to get your coaching badges – it takes a number of years and it’s a big commitment – that you have to be sure you want to do it before you go through that. I’m not sure at the moment.

“I think it would be a shame not to use some of the experience I’ve built up over the 16 years that I’ve been playing.

“I hope I can use that now with the younger players here at Liverpool, helping them as much as possible.”

Many expected Milner to struggle this season however he has started every Liverpool game this season.

He starred as the Reds beat Tottenham 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday before shining against PSG.

And former Liverpool midfielder Stan Collymore believes Klopp will now have trouble with his team selection over the coming weeks.

“The midfielder covered more ground, created more chances and made more passes in an opposition half at Wembley,” Collymore said.

“Klopp has a proper selection headache brewing with Gini Wijnaldum and Naby Keita both impressing again, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both waiting for their chance.”
