Spider-Man Far From Home: Mysterio FINALLY confirmed? Jake Gyllenhaal speaks out

The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently in production, and sees Tom Holland returning for his second headline outing as Peter Parker, and fifth outing overall.

Gyllenhaal has long been rumoured to be playing an incarnation of super-villain Mysterio, but this has never been confirmed.

However, a new interview with French publication L’essentiel appears to see him speaking about the role for the first time.

Roughly translated back from French, he said: “I have always been fascinated by this kind of story even though I did not grow up reading Spiderman comics.

“The idea of heroes and superheroes is… important, especially in the world around us.”

Pushed to elaborate, he is quoted as saying: “I don’t want to talk politics but… we need heroic acts in our everyday lives.

“I love the way Marvel Studios are approaching Avengers because they’re not afraid to upset the established rules. That the superheroes are of different sexes and colours of skin, it gives a strong message to young people.

“I can’t tell you much about the plot of the next Spider-Man, but Tom Holland is a young comedian.”

There was confusion earlier this year over whether or not Gyllenhaal had been confirmed for the part, especially after he was spotted filming.

All Kevin Feige, Marvel boss, has said on the matter is: “Well, I mean, sure, let the speculation begin. That’s always fun.

“We like [the title] of course because it ties into Homecoming, not just keeping that word going, which we like and we liked it more than Homecoming 2, but that notion of ‘home’ is a word that has dual meanings we’d like to continue with this [Marvel Cinematic Universe] version of Spider-Man. So, Far From Home has multiple meanings.”

Spider-Man, as anyone who has seen Avengers: Infinity War will know, is in something of a tricky spot right now.

And given that it was confirmed last year that the next Spider-Man film will start within minutes of the upcoming Avengers 4, it seems Peter Parker needs to be the subject of a major plot twist very soon.

Avengers 4 reshoots are currently in progress in the US, ahead of that movie’s April 2019 release date.

It is thought that the all-star blockbuster will draw a line under the current era of Marvel movies, with Spider-Man: Far From Home the first to be released thereafter.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is out on July 5, 2019 in the USA. A UK date has not yet been confirmed.
