Avengers 4: THIS character was intended to be KILLED OFF long before Thanos' snap
Avengers: Infinity War concluded with Thanos successfully collecting all of the Infinity Stones and managing to wipe out half of all living things across the universe.
Among the lucky 50% who survived was Nebula (Karen Gillan) – although she was originally going to be killed off way back in Marvel‘s first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Speaking at Fan Expo Canada, as reported by Comicbook.com, the former Doctor Who star revealed that she only expected to work on the character for eight days.
“I thought when I signed onto the first Guardians that I was going to shoot for eight days and then die,” she said.
“That’s what it was in the script.”
Things were changed, however, and Nebula has become much more of a fleshed-out character across both Guardians characters and the all-star Infinity War.
Gillan hinted that it was an emotional moment in her audition that persuaded Gunn to keep the character alive.
“The fact that all of this has happened with the character is really surprising but not, because when I did the screen test for Nebula, it was quite an emotional scene between her and Gamora, which never made it — it was a fake scene, so it wasn’t in the movie,” she explained.
“Well, it was an emotional scene, but I started crying during it.
“And then James Gunn really responded to that, I remember, and then we felt that we’d found this whole other aspect of a character that could have just been bad, you know?
“So I kind of knew she had the opportunity to go [deeper] and didn’t think that she would, but the fact that she did made me really happy as an actor.”
It remains to be seen what part Nebula will play in Avengers 4, but she confirmed on social media that she’s been attending reshoots in Atlanta.
The star also recently revealed that Nebula very nearly had a Scottish accent, until Gunn changed his mind at the last minute.
Speaking on The Empire Film Podcast late last year, she said: “I auditioned for Nebula in a Scottish accent. Did a screen-test in a Scottish accent and got the role.
“She was going to be Scottish! We were going to have an Invernessian alien in Guardians of the Galaxy. We were so close!
“And then right before I started filming the director (James Gunn) was like, ‘make her American.’ And I was like ‘okay’.”
