X-Men Dark Phoenix: Is THIS a massive 'plot hole'? Fans spot apparent gaffe in new trailer

While many seem to have assumed it’s a mistake, we’ll have to wait until the movie’s in cinemas next year to know for sure what’s going on.

But a handful of viewers online have noticed that Storm – who has the power to manipulate the weather – is seen at one point standing with an umbrella.

“Just watched the #XMenDarkPhoenix trailer…” wrote one. “Why is Storm holding an umbrella in the rain at the funeral? She literally controls the weather.”

Another pointed out: “Storm holding an umbrella? That’s like Superman taking a bus. #XMenDarkPhoenix.”

A third joked: “Storm carrying an umbrella in that #XMenDarkPhoenix trailer when she can literally control the weather is blowing my mind like Donald Duck wearing a towel when he gets out the shower but not when he’s dressed.”

“I mean Storm… MISTRESS OF THE ELEMENTS has an umbrella,” posted someone else.

“Not mistress of the trees or mistress of the Versace collection. But mistress of the elements. @AlexShipppp why didn’t you speak up? I’m just.. *throws hands up* #XMenDarkPhoenix.”

Yet another post reads: “I’m optimistic. I’m really bothered over the fact Storm is holding an umbrella lol buuuuuuuuuut I’m optimistic.

“Hopefully Fox last two X-Men movies will end on a high note before Marvel/Disney takes over.”

The context of why Storm is holding an umbrella is, of course, unknown at this point, but it’s certainly a recurring observation among fans who aren’t particularly enthused by the new promo.

“Feeling pretty letdown by the new #XMenDarkPhoenix trailer! It’s just an updated version of X-Men 3 minus hugh jackman…” read one response on Twitter.

“A little low on a WOW-Factor but it’s definitely got my attention! Hopefully the VFX are still cooking! #XMenDarkPhoenix,” said another.

Sophie Turner debuted the trailer on James Corden’s US chatshow last night, days after it leaked online.

The new clip also provides a glimpse at the likes of Jessica Chastain in ehr villain role, as well as returning stars Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult.

The future of the X-Men remains unclear at this time – after Disney took over possession of the property and are expected to merge it with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Dark Phoenix is out on February 14, 2019.
