Sky News has won the 2018 International Emmy for News for its coverage of the plight of Rohingya refugees fleeing the regime in Myanmar.

The team of Alex Crawford, Ashish Joshi, Sally Arthy, Neville Lazarus, Kirsty Benbow, Pete Milnes and Martin Smith received the award at a ceremony in New York.

Bruce Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said: “Tonight’s winning programs illustrate once again the absolute urgency and necessity of free and unrestricted reporting.

“We congratulate the winning reporters and crews behind these outstanding reports for having the courage to shine their lens on horrific human tragedy and violent extremism at the risk of their own safety.”

Sky News filmed the first independent evidence from Myanmar’s Rakhine State, which laid bare the shocking deprivation and desperation among thousands of stranded Rohingya Muslims.

The alarming footage showed emaciated women and newborn babies who were dumped on beaches and left to die – just some of the victims of Myanmar’s brutal crackdown against the Rohingyas.
