The massively successful series of films made a superstar out of the actor, as well as Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.

But the huge fame that came with the job seemingly left Grint reconsidering his future with it.

In a new interview, he revealed that after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – the fourth of the eight films – he thought about throwing in his wand.

“I had just finished my GCSEs,” he told The Independent.

“I thought ‘Do I actually want to keep doing this? It’s a bit of a drag.’

“Because obviously it’s a big sacrifice. You take for granted anonymity, just doing normal stuff, just going out.”

He added: “Everything was different and a little bit scary.

“There were times when I was like ‘I’m done.’”

Grint has continued to maintain a successful acting career since, although in smaller-scale projects than the mammoth Potter era.

His show Sick Note for Sky One recently returned for another series, and he’s also set to appear in The ABC Murders.

The star has also been appearing in Snatch, the comedy-drama series based on the film of the same name.

Meanwhile the Harry Potter universe continues to churn out new stories: the second of a planned five Fantastic Beasts movies is in cinemas from November.

Ron also lives on thanks to the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play, showing on Broadway and the West End.

Today a new fan theory gave a heartbreaking new spin to Hermione’s arc in the books – suggesting the reason she spent so much time with the Weasleys was because she was homeless.

The theorist said she could have wiped her family’s memory of her midway through the literary series, but not told Harry and Ron about it.

The next Fantastic Beasts film is out on November 16.
