Three words have never been so confusing.

Fans were baffled how many Last Jedi there were and if Luke or Rey really were teh last one or more.

Then foreign filmposters apparently solved the problem by making teh word Jedi plural.

But it seems that something was lost in translation, since Rian Johnson has publically stated that he intended the opoosite and also clarified what the word “last” really means..

After all the excitement of Star wars Celebration, the director continued winning over fans with an interactive Twitter Q&A session this week.

One fan asked: “You said the title for TLJ is singular…But for example the title in Italian is ‘Gli Ultimi Jedi’,so plural. What can you say?”

Johnson answered: “I said in my mind it’s singular. I didn’t do the title translations.”

So the definitive answer is that there is only one Last Jedi. Whether that turns out to be Luke or Rey remains to be seen.

After establishing the number of Last Jedi, Johnson also firmly explained even more. Star Wars fan Nate Richter tweeted at the filmmaker and unexpectedly received a direct reply.

He wrote: “For my birthday today, all I want is for Rian Johnson to tell me what The Last Jedi means.”

Johnson replied: “It means the final Jedi. Happy birthday!”

After a fan frenzy over what that meant, he added: ”Everyone knows that ‘last’ and ‘final’ are synonyms right? That they mean the exact same thing?”

Technically he is not correct.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary “last” means: “Coming after all others in time or order; final. Most recent in time; latest.”

However “final” is defined as: “Coming at the end of a series. Reached or designed to be reached as the outcome of a process or a series of actions and events.”

Clearly the word ‘final” has a more absolute sense, a finality to it. So what did Johnson mean?

What is important is that Johnson believes they mean or imply the same thing.

Since he explained the meaning of The Last Jedi title as “the final Jedi”, this must mean that he absolutely intends this film to present last ever, final of his (or her) kind Jedi.

Hopefully, this will the very last, absolutely final word on the matter.

Star Wars The Last Jedi is out on December 15.
