First Man is already being heralded as an Oscar contender.

The biopic stars Ryan Gossling as one of the most famous men, ever: Neil Armstrong.

The first man to walk on the moon, Armstrong’s life was full of turmoil and unexplored moments.

Based on the biography of the same name, First Man is Damien Chazelle’s second go at an Oscar winner.

How old do you have to be to watch First Man?

First Man is rated 12A by the British Board of Film Classification.

A 12A rating means no one under 12 can see a movie unaccompanied in the cinema.

The BBFC cited both language and threat in the 12A rating.

They wrote: “There are a number of intense test flight sequences in which malfunctioning equipment results in a threat to astronauts’ lives.”

“There is mild injury detail when an astronaut has blood on the side of his face following a crash landing.

“There are also scenes of emotional upset when a family lose a young child to Leukaemia.”

For language, BBFC has cited “infrequent strong language” including hell, screw, and damn (and some more serious words).

Though perhaps what may be most disturbing to young viewers is the constant shaking of the camera.

Especially on an IMAX screen, the vibrating makes some scenes almost impossible to watch.

BBFC includes the disclaimer: “This work contains flashing images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.”

The trailers have all also been rated 12A and are an accurate barometer for parents to gauge whether they should bring their children to the cinema.

In America, the movie is rated PG-13.

Common Sense Media, an American website, says: “some thematic content involving peril, and brief strong language”

PG-13 has the same restrictions as 12A except for those under 13.

One anonymous parent described some potential problems for young viewers.

“One use of the “F” word, harsh but somewhat justified in context,” the parent wrote.

“The tragic death of an infant occurs early on (offscreen, we see the funeral) and is referenced multiple times later.

“Another tragedy sees multiple astronauts die.

“This scene isn’t graphic but it is quite shocking and upsetting.”

First Man is in cinemas now.
