Remakes Revealed: THESE are the best and worst remakes of ALL TIME

It is a widely held belief that we are running out of ideas. The proof seems to be in the proliferation of remakes and reboots, of sequels and prequels, being released increasingly each year. As fans bemoan the fates of their beloved originals, some herald remakes with ushering in new generations of fans to a film otherwise lost to time. But not all remakes are created equal.

MyVoucherCodes has trawled through decades of data to discover which are the best and worst remakes of all time. Here they are.

Studying Rotten Tomatoes data, new research shows that the best remake of all time is The Departed, from 2006.

The worst remake?

That title goes to The Fog, a 2005 remake of the 1980 mystery thriller by cult-classic maker John Carpenter.

You may not even know The Departed was a remake, but it was.

The original movie, Infernal Affairs, was a 2002 movie from Hong Kong, given a Hollywood twist.

Express was told exclusively by the researchers that the average remake is 15% worse than the original when taking into account the critic and audience scores.

Additionally, the average remake makes £33.8 thousand ($44k) less than its original.

The most profitable movie was Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast from 2017.

The movie starring Emma Watson made a profit of just over £767.1 million ($1billion).

From box office revenue to audience scores and more, the chart sorts each remake which you can then filter by genre and/or studio.

From the chart above you can see the remake that had the best critics score in comparison to its original was The Fly from 1986.

Red Dawn, Gulliver’s Travel’s, and Down To Earth, on the other hand, had the worst scores of remarks at 39 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

This year’s Oscar contender and highly lauded A Star Is Born came in fourth place overall, in comparison to the 1976 Barbara Streisand version (which itself was a remake of a remake).

When down to audience scores alone, the 1997 remake of The Absent-Minded Professor, which was renamed Flubber, ranked the worst of remakes.

With plenty more remakes in our future – from Flash Gordon to Clueless – this chart will likely have changes to make.

How these new remakes fare remains to be seen, but if the Disney live-action remakes can match the success of Beauty and the Beast, they’ve got nothing to worry about.
