Madrid’s foreign minister Josep Borrell said the ex-Tory leader will not go down in history as the “best Prime Minister of Britain” for giving Britons a chance to vote on their future in the the momentous June 2016 referendum, which led to Brexit. He laid into Mr Cameron, who resigned from frontline politics two years ago after the UK voted to the leave the EU, for giving the UK and Scotland a chance to have their say in independence referendums. But he had high praise for current Prime Minister Theresa May who is currently battling against threats of a no confidence vote. Mr Borrell told politics news site, Politico.co.uk: “Mr Cameron will not pass in the history as the best Prime Minister of Britain.

“Cameron played poker with his country at least twice, with Scotland and Europe.”

Speaking of the current Prime Minister, he said: “Theresa May is doing quite well.

“As far it looks like she is quite a resilient woman, someone who is really tough, having a strong stance and resisting.

“She knows what she wants, and she fights for it and she resists.

“It must be quite hard to be in a cabinet and propose something and seven members of the cabinet resign because they don’t agree.

“In spite of that to continue, to confront parliamentarian groups, and row against many people, against public opinion, newspapers, everybody and to keep the path.. it’s quite good.”

His remarks come after reports David Cameron was vying to make a return to politics two years on from leaving Number 10 and resigning as an MP after Britain voted Brexit

A source close to Mr Cameron said he would not rule out a return if Mrs May asked him to come back.

Mr Cameron had avoided the spotlight since Prime Minister Theresa May was voted in as Tory leader and gave a famous speech on the steps of Downing Street as he left office prematurely.

He has since admitted that he had got some decisions “wrong” during his days in office.

Mr Borrell also used Mr Cameron’s previous actions to rule out Spain holding an independence referendum.

He insisted that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez would not be calling a referendum on the independence of Catalonia.

The Spanish foreign minister said: “Mr Sanchez is very right to say ‘I cannot give you a referendum of secession’ Understand.. no.

“I am not Cameron, Spain is not Britain. We have a constitution. It is impossible, it is not going to happen.

“Like in Italy, like in Germany, like in France, like in the US, like everywhere across the world, with the only exception of Britain. It is not going to happen.”
