Selena Gomez has announced her controversial programme about teenage suicide 13 Reasons Why “isn’t over”, revealing details for a second series.

The US singer and actress is co-producer of the hit streaming show about a teenage girl who commits suicide and leaves a box with details of why she wanted to end her life.

It is so far the most tweeted about show of 2017 and also the year’s most controversial, with mental health experts saying it glamorises suicide and New Zealand censors even creating a new rating for it.

The fear is the story will incite teenagers with suicidal thoughts to take inspiration.

Despite the criticism, Gomez is a strong advocate of the story.

Sharing a teaser for the second series, she wrote: “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why is coming.”

The Netflix show is based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher and tells the story of a teenage boy who is sent a box from a classmate who committed suicide, containing 13 tapes explaining her reasons why.

Netflix itself added additional warnings about graphic content following an online backlash.

Gomez had planned to play the part of Hannah, the girl who commits suicide, but ultimately decided to stay behind the camera.

“It’s frightening for me because I know the cult following it has, which is the reason why I didn’t want to be in it,” Gomez said.

“I see myself in Hannah so much. Seven years ago I did and even more so today, which I think is funny because it’s backwards. The older I get the more insecure I get, which is odd. But that’s something a lot of people can relate to.

“A lot of girls feel like they have to be a certain way for attention. Social media has amplified all of that. I get that she didn’t want that to be what her life was.”
